Wonder how we'll deal with the Delap 'long throw'.
Surely the paddock and Kemlyn "de-bagging" squads will be on duty! As he lines the first one up, whip his "Ken Mcnaughts" down to his ankles, only do it the once as it will blow his confidence.

I have an emotional connection here that some of my generation may share.

On 21 October 1972, I was at Anfield to watch Liverpool play Stoke City. There wasn't that much about them then, as there isn't now. Save for the fact that the England goalkeeper and, arguably, the best in the world at the time, was playing for Stoke.

Those of you who still respect our applauding of visiting goalkeepers would nevertheless be bemused at the reception Gordon got. Thunderous stuff, complete with chants of "Gordon, Gordon". The man reciprocated the respect with generous applause back towards us.

How could this be? We were Liverpool, not ING-ER-LUND. But in those distant days the antipathy wasn't quite the same as it is now. And we knew a legend when we saw one, even if he wasn't one of ours.

We duly proceeded to piss all over them and, were it not for Gordon Banks, we would surely have beaten Stoke by a lot more than two goals to one, the winner coming in the last minute.

We even cheeked him with chants of "Clemence for England" to which he responded by turning towards us with a grin and making the shh gesture, finger on lips.

I was delighted when I got home and was busily telling my dad about this new phenomenon - to my young 15 year-old eyes - that I had witnessed and how it was about as far removed from the usual sullen partisanship of football as one could imagine. I felt proud to be part of a group of supporters that could behave in that way.

The next day, Sunday 22 October 1972, idly watching TV there was an item on the news. Gordon Banks had been involved in a serious car crash. Whilst not mortally wounded, it turned out that the accident cost him the sight in his right eye. His career was halted there and then.

I was devastated. I couldn't get my head around the fact that this superb, world-leading sportsman, whom I had witnessed in action less than 24 hours earlier and had bantered with (well, me and 20-odd thousand other Kopites) had been cut down in an instant.

As fate would have it, the fixtures for the following season were published to show that our first game of the season was at home...to Stoke City.

Our then dignified club custodians understood straight away what had to be done. Gordon Banks was invited as a guest of honour. He was introduced onto the pitch before the match to a tumultous and emotional welcome. We presented him with a silver salver by way of tribute. Waving cheerily, who knows what was going through his mind? I never heard or saw a hint of anything approaching bitterness as to how his career was so cruelly ended.

Now aged 70, I trust he will be at the match tomorrow. I hope he still enjoys the memory of that day in 1972 when we gave him the respect he so richly deserved.

Gordon Banks. Legend.

Great post redchiz- saw a quotefrom him the other week. He was asked would he change anything and he said without a hint of bitterness, "I'd drive a bit more carefully!"

Slightly nervous about tomorrow I have to say, if we're not up for the battle we could get stung. I think Sami should play tomorrow and I've got a feeling Ngog will for his height. If Rafa wants to rest players then Tuesday is the day for that.

Hopefully this is the game when we start moving through the gears and things really begin to click in time for the Derby.

Agree but does our strongest team contain players who are in need of a rest? I think it does just now. Mainly Mascherano and Kuyt.

And different games call for different players. 'Horses for courses' and all that. This would deffo be a game I'd think about playing Hyypia for the aerial threat they will pose.

I'm all for playing our 'strongest team' but it's never as simple as that.

This time last season we also had 10 pts from 4 games  and were flying having put 6 past Derby- then came the international break- followed by Pompey away.

Rafa left out Torres and Gerrard as they had had tough international game - we had a chance to keep the great start going by playing our strongest team  but lost the momentum and were lucky to get away with a draw . That was followed by the home draw against Birmingham and the rest is history.

This game is as important as any other this season , maybe even more , and we should play our strongest team regardless of 'tiredness'

Torres on the bench for me today I'm afraid - don't want to push that hamstring at all aespecially against these yardogs.
Christ if we can beat United without him we can beat Stoke without him.
Want to have him available for the rest of the season not out for 4 months because some pub player has kicked him.

I dunno what to make of that at all.

This should have been 3 points and a healthy addition to our goal difference.

Didn't expect anything less from a team like that and it paid off for them. We should have been able to have broken them down though and that's the bad thing, we didn't. Felt we could have easily won that 3 or 4-0 had we took our chances. Looks like we're gonna have to beat the shite now to make up for that...

If its any consolation I don't think Nidgemo is too well liked on here anyway or anywhere else for that matter

I am well loved everywhere where people don't take themselves too seriously and have a good sense of humour and a liking for open minded debate. wink

FWIW, that's not me that posted that on the stoke forum. Fuck knows who it is masquerading as me.

Or, indeed, why anyone would want to.
