For anyone reading this through for the first time its the full account of the trip, from its initial conception through to the pictures thread from when we got back. I've edited them together to make it easier to navigate.

Has anyone off here ever been?

I'm thinking about going up there in the summer.

I've been. Be prepared to be surprised as there is absolutely nothing left of the original village at all. It's well signposted and you shouldn't have a problem finding the memorial - nice enough little spot - but the place is a bit of a wilderness. I saw a programme about Shanks ages ago and a few of his old mates went back to Glenbuck and at that time there was still a few ruins left, abandoned settlements like you get in Ireland but now there is nothing at all, except for surprisingly enough a working mine.

Still worth going, dead easy to get to (just off the M74, about 5 miles).

Ireland's full of ruins and abandoned settlements. People fighing in the streets over dead dogs. One eyebrow per person. Lovely place, go sometime.

Thanks RHP. I'm aware that its pretty much deserted these days so I'm thinking of dropping in on the way to somewhere else. Cowdenbeath most likely.

Going to Glenbuck is one of those things I've allways been meaning to do but never got round to it. This year I reckon I'll get it done.

I was just going to post that Jack, lets get it going.

Well then, lets see who'd be interested.

As for an overnight stay theres no hotels nearby, the nearest major connurbation would seem to be.....Glasgow.

Bev will drive

Like shite she will John  :D

She'd certainly share it though.

So, the proposal is an On The Kop Jolly to Glenbuck to visit the Shankly Memorial in the town of his birth, followed by a piss up somewhere like Glasgow.

Anyone interested?

Nice one! Murph is going to get a price on transport over the next few days, after that we'll see how it goes with cost and numbers of interested people. Also the timing would be important.

Has anyone else give this any thought?

Include me in depending on date. Glasgow though? Been there, seen it, done it, bought the tshirt as have most people. Any chance just a small town somewhere with a couple of pubs? More my type of thing. Or if it has to be a big town/city to stay what about Edinburgh? If it has to be Glasgee though Little Dublin it is.

I'd prefer something smaller myself as Evo suggested but Glenbuck seems to be in the middle of nowhere!!

If anyone can suggest anywhere closer to stay over that'd be great!
