Not yet mate.  Writing a little article to go with it 'cos they don't usually just put up links since Sky bought Rivals.net.  Will get on this weekend though mate.

Just knocked this up based on what I've read of the great man.  Should be on Shankly Gates in the next few days or so.

King Billy of Liddellpool

Liverpool Football Club has had its fair share of influential figures in it's 116 year history, many of whom have been flying Scotsmen.  John Houlding, Bill Shankly, Alan Hansen and Kenny Dalgish to name but some of the great names that have graced the club with their presence.

Somewhere after John Houlding served an eviction notice on Everton and before Bill Shankly started revolutionising fooball with his socialist outlook and winning mentality there was another fellow Scot, also named Bill, who left a lasting impression on all those who saw him play.  His name - William Beveridge Liddell.

Born on 10th January 1922 in Townhill outside Dunfermline, Liddell was signed to Liverpool in April 1939, aged 17, for the sum of £200 following a few quiet words of Reds defender and future Manchester United manager Matt Busby in the ear of his manager George Kay.  Despite the outbreak of war in later that year, Liddell made 148 wartime appearances for the club scoring 83 goals.  He also made guest appearances for Cambridge Town, Hearts, Toronto Scottish, Linfield, Chelsea as well as his home town Dunfermline as well as 11 appearances for his native Scotland scoring 7 goals.  Liddell replied to the call of duty during wartime when he trained to be a navigator which saw him volunteer for the Royal Air Force.

After the end of the Second World War Liddell made his first official appearance for Liverpool on 5th January 1946 in an FA Cup tie against Chester City alongside Bob Paisley, another club debutant that day.  The flying Scotsman was influential to the capture of the club's first League Championship since the roaring twenties which was clinched a year later.  Liddell was also at the forefront of Liverpool's run to their second FA Cup final which ended in a 2-0 defeat to Arsenal at Wembley in 1950.

He was awarded 29 caps playing for Scotland scoring 8 goals in those appearances.  His debut against Switzerland at Hampden Park in a 3-1 victory over Switzerland saw, Billy celebrate in style, scoring two of the goals in the 25th and 28th minutes of the game.  He also featured in a Great Britain XI against the Rest of Europe, alongside Stanley Matthews in both 1947 and 1955.  The constant avertion of losing the club's top flight status was thanks to Billy's ability superb ability on the wing, a contribution so great that the club were nicknamed Liddellpool.  When the club were eventually relegated in 1954 Liddell was awarded the captaincy and deployed in the heart of midfield but this transition was not enough to ensure promotion.

With the arrival of Bill Shankly in December 1959, there was a changing of the guard with King Billy retiring two years after Shanks' arrival aged 39.  Even after he had hung up his playing boots, Billy continued to work and became bursar at the University of Liverpool shortly after his retirement.

Liddell died in July 2001 at 79 years of age.

Those who saw him play have regarded him as one of the greatest Liverpool players of all time.  The club honoured his contribution and memory with a plaque in the Anfield museum in 2004.  Unlike in the hometowns of Bill Shankly and soon Bob Paisley, there is no memorial commemorating Townhill's most famosu son.  In a bid to ensure that Billy Liddell is remembered for generations to come, the Dunfermline Press have drawn up a petition for a statue to be erected so that visitors and the people of Dunfermline can remember his outstanding contribution to sport.

The petition has been signed and supported by hundreds of supporters and can be signed at www.dunfermlinepres s.com/petition

Being a resident of Townhill I am being pretty vocal about this btw,
Billy Liddell single-handedly saved LIVERPOOL FC from obscurity,if it wasn't for Billy Liddell then LFC wouldn't be where they are today,NO Bill Shankly,NO Sir Bob Paisley,NO 5 European cup wins,NO 18 league titles, this man was our saving grace during the 50's,do me a favour and get this petition signed, this one time Anfield legend deserves a statue in his home town, come on people of OTK,sign it and lets get this TRUE Anfield legend the honour he deserves

Tony

signed.  I guess they didn't have numbers on when he played?  He was an inside left, so maybe he should've been 11?  Anyone know?
